Free cover letter generator

A cover letter with nothing in it you did not do.

Upload your resume and paste the job description. We write a letter for that job from your resume alone: each paragraph answers one thing the job asks for, with the lines of your resume it rests on beside it. Every figure is yours, and nothing is said about the company that the job does not say.

  • Free, the whole letter, no account needed
  • Every sentence checked against your resume before you see it
  • No "I am writing to express my interest"
  • Your resume and this job come with you if you sign up

By writing, you agree to our privacy policy. We keep your resume, the job description and the letter so you can pick up where you left off, until you ask us to delete them. Their text is sent to Google's Gemini to write the letter.

How the cover letter is written.

Is it really free?

Yes. The whole letter, not a preview, with no account and no card. You can write three a day. Copy it or download it for Word, and change anything you like before you send it.

Will it make things up about me?

It is built not to, and that is the point of it. AI writes the letter in parts, and our code reads every sentence before you see it. A figure your resume does not give is removed. So is a bigger part than your resume claims: if your resume says you supported a migration, the letter never says you led it. So is a tool, an employer or a qualification nobody gave, and any sentence that describes your work in words your resume never uses. What fails is removed, never quietly rewritten.

Why does each paragraph show lines of my resume?

So you can see why it is there. Each middle paragraph answers one thing the job asks for, quoted from the job, with the lines of your resume that show it. A hiring manager may ask about any of them, and you should be able to answer. Untick "Show where each line comes from" to read it as it will be sent.

What goes in "Why this company"?

One line, in your own words, about why you want this job. It is the one thing no resume knows, and the part every other generator fills with praise for a mission it has never read. Leave it blank and the letter uses only what the job description says about the company, or says nothing.

Why is my letter short?

Because it says only what your resume can back. A letter of 150 to 300 words that a hiring manager reads to the end does more than 400 that they skim. If yours is thin, your resume probably says what you did without what came of it. The resume optimizer shows which lines.

It said there was nothing to prove. Why?

Nothing in your resume answers what this job asks for, so any letter would have to make it up. Try job match to see each requirement against your resume, and what is missing.

Do you keep my resume?

Yes, so you can pick up where you left off: your resume, the job description and the letter are kept on our server until you ask us to delete them. Every letter has a "Delete my resume now" link, or email hello@prept.fyi. If you create an account, your resume and the job come with you. Their text is sent to Google's Gemini to write the letter; Google does not use it to improve its products.

How is this different from the other free tools?

The cover letter goes with an application you have decided to send. Job match tells you whether to apply, the resume optimizer rewrites your lines for the job, the ATS checker tells you whether a tracking system can read the file, and the interview question generator gets you ready for the call.
